What is your business or project name?
Writing a value proposition can seem a little daunting. However, with a few expert tips you should be able to pull together a successful value proposition in no time. Just follow our step-by-step guide below.
Step 1. Set up your value proposition canvas.
A value proposition canvas is a framework that can help tackle the core challenge most businesses face by creating compelling products customers actually want to buy. Instead of just telling people how great your product is, aim to understand customer problems and produce products or services that solve them.
It consists of two main parts:
- Customer profile: Understands your customers. Identifies their jobs (tasks to get done), pains (challenges faced), and gains (positive outcomes hoped for).
- Value map: Focuses on how your product addresses those needs (relieving pains and fulfilling gains).
Step 2. Identify your customer’s problem.
An essential part of your value proposition is identifying a problem or need your customers face. This requires a thorough understanding of your target audience and their needs.
Step 3. Evaluate your business, product or service.
Evaluate how your specific solution meets those customer needs. (e.g., an online store offering a wider range of sizes directly resolves options missing elsewhere).
Step 4. Identify your unique value proposition.
Most businesses have competitors. Sometimes it isn’t enough to simply solve a problem; you need a unique value proposition (UVP) that truly sets you apart from the competition.
Step 5. Write up your proposition.
Once you’ve identified the problem, your solution, and your UVP, you have everything you need to write a solid, concise statement.
